A dog is never too old to be trained! The communication of what is being asked of the dog may change depending on age and physical challenges the dog may have.
At K9First, we follow the LIMA method (Least Intrusive Minimally Aversive) in our dog centered training. This method is an effective and scientifically sound way of training animals. Using LIMA methods prevents the distressing and harmful side effects that can result from punishment-based training. We encourage the dog to follow a desired set of behaviors. Our role as a trainer is not to force a dog to perform a behavior or control a dog’s behavior. Instead, our role is to help a dog make desirable choices in the least invasive way possible. We then show the human how to teach and reinforce these behaviors and explain why these methods are effective.
Yes! We are happy to come to your house. In fact seeing the dog in his natural environment often gives our trainers a better idea of the obstacles you may be facing in training.
Absolutely! Changes can be hard for humans and for dogs. Our training works to help build the dog's confidence with the little newcomer. We can also help build a positive relationship between dog and kids as well as help you know how to navigate normal dog behavior with their human litter mates preventing unwanted behavior before it begins.
As positive reinforcement trainers, we rely on tools that help dogs love to learn. We use clickers, target sticks, mats, treats, whistles, flirt poles, harnesses, tugs, and more. We do not use choke chains, prong collars, electric shock collars, or any other tool that functions by introducing pain or fear to punish behavior.
